Bed bugs treatment
Q - I’m not sure if I have bed bugs. Can you recommend anything for me to do?
A – The following is a simple procedure to determine how badly you have bed bugs. Place numerous pieces of double-sided tape throughout your bedroom and other areas of your home. Bed bugs will stick to the tape and you will be able to identify what level of bed bug infestation is present in your home.
Q. If I have bed bugs what do I need to do?
A – Having bed bugs is a nightmare. In order to get rid of bed bugs you should follow these suggestions albeit the procedure is very tedious. Here is a simple checklist of things to be done although it is usually recommended that you hire a professional pest control company to complete the treatment.
-
Remove all clothing from your cupboards and drawers, plus take down curtains, bed linens, furniture coverings.
-
Wash and dry everything, at high heat for at least 30 minutes. This will hopefully kill any eggs that may have survived.
-
Once you have washed and dried the items place them into large plastic sealable bags.
-
All furniture should be placed in the centre of the room or at least 12-18 inches away from the walls. Furniture should be carefully inspected for bed bugs by removing all drawers and dismantling the furniture if possible. It is best to do this outside or in the garage if that is possible.
-
Remove all light switch covers and wall plates from the wall so that they too can be vacuumed and sprayed.
-
Items such as artwork and electronics, which can’t be sprayed, need to be vacuumed but remember to get inside all the cracks and crevices.
-
Now is the opportunity to “de-clutter” so remove items as much as possible
-
Keep suitcases, handbags and sports bags in the garage if possible. Have them sprayed as well.
-
Whatever you do, don’t sleep in other rooms within your home thinking you are getting away from the bed bugs. They are attracted to the warmth of our bodies and the carbon dioxide we breathe out at night, so they will find you. You’ll just end up spreading them even more.
Q - What bed bug treatments work?
A - For anything other than minor bed bug infestations you will need a pest control company. Typical bed bug treatments involve chemical spraying. A thorough inspection by a professional usually takes 4-6 hours, and usually more than one bed bug treatment will be required.
